Field/Construction Safety Specialist – Safety and Risk Management

Summary 

This position will support the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) and Field/Construction Safety initiatives including support and implementing of all EHS policies, procedures, and activities in accordance with all local, state, federal (OSHA, EPA, etc.), and other requirements to ensure regulatory compliance. 

 Qualifications 

  • BS in Occupational Safety or equivalent work experience 
  • 3-5 or More years of relevant experience (Field/Construction Safety, EHS) 
  • OSHA 500 or 510 Preferred 
  • OSHA 30, OSHA 10 
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred. 
  • Effective communication and organizational skills 

 Responsibilities 

  • Support the implementation of long-term strategic EHS systems and programs in support of behavior-based safety, risk assessment/hazard identification, environmental/sustainability, and associate health& safety.  
  • Provides feedback to the site Leadership Team regarding EHS objectives and regulatory compliance issues. 
  • Monitors performance/impact of the plant safety system and programs. Recommends modifications for improvement of established systems and programs.  Serves as the catalyst leading the overall safety performance at the facility.  
  • Compiles and distributes safety and health related information to be used as tools for the reduction and/or elimination of workplace accidents.  
  • Works directly with facilitators/supervisors and the hourly workforce to identify hazards and eliminate unsafe conditions.  
  • Provides support, training, and policy guidance for the Safety Core Team, plant business unit teams, facilitators/supervisors, and support areas, as well as EHS project teams.  
  • Coordinates the Job Safety Analysis, Hazard Assessment, Hearing Conservation, Industrial Hygiene sampling, fire protection, LOTO, and environmental reporting programs for the site.  Coordinates additional EHS related programs as needed and identified. 
  • Evaluates and identifies areas of improvement from a safety and health perspective to ensure associate safety.  Provides training to key qualified associates to assist in conducting safety audits. 
  • Identifies and manages personal protective equipment needs for the site, as well as evaluates the effectiveness and functionality of required PPE. 
  • Completes site reporting consistent with EPA, OSHA, and corporate requirements. 
  • Establishes, maintains, and communicates EHS metrics to evaluate current programs and analyze opportunities for improvement. 
  • Serves as the plant liaison to EHS Team/Office for all environmental, health and safety issues.  
  • Support Performance Verification Process (PVP) through corporate EHS. 
  • Assists with resolution of identified EHS audit findings. 

Other Core Competencies 

  • Possess knowledge in all aspects of Manufacturing Construction Safety including demolition and laboratory facility renovations; High risk work experience- hot work, elevated work, hazardous energy control / LOTO, line break, core drilling, crane lifts, machine safety, chemical safety, fall prevention, electrical safety as well as proficient in hazard communication. 
  • Excellent communication skills when providing jobsite safety orientation and skillful in mentoring/coaching subcontractors and employees in safe work practices. 
  • Must have a keen eye for detail and be adept at recognizing and complying with government regulations and site-specific safety standards. 
  • Conduct routine (daily and weekly) jobsite safety inspections and prepare written reports on their findings. 
  • Proficient in reviewing safety data sheets (SDSs) for chemicals brought onsite. 
  • Pre-Task Planning (JSAs, SPAs, Crane Lift Plans, etc.) review and approval experience, 
  • Strong subcontractor safety management skills. 
  • Safety program development and implementation. 
  • Collaborator and working cross-functionally. 
  • Managing resources and relationships – internally and externally. 
  • Consistently evaluating processes – recommending changes when appropriate 
  • Communicating throughout organization. 
  • Initiating new, creative ideas 
  • Willingness to be flexible – adapting to innovative programs, initiatives, and paths. 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects/tasks. 

Location/Travel Potential 

Currently we are looking to identify local Safety Specilaists to support our safety project initiatives at client sites in multiple regions including Raleigh/Durham, NC; West Point, PA; Rahway, NJ.   

 It is our goal to assign people to projects that are within a commutable distance from their home. This allows ValSource to be more cost competitive, saves money for our clients and minimizes the travel burden on our employees. While we will try to adhere to this philosophy, you may be required to travel for a portion of your projects. Expenses incurred for travel-related assignments will be reimbursed in accordance with our travel policy.
